Spending time on something simply for fun or the inspiration you feel from it nourishes your soul and reinvigorates your mind. The inspiration will then be used in so many areas of your life. That is an artist date.
Julia Cameron created the idea of ‘artists dates’ to help artists regularly set aside time to play and refill their well of creativity. An artist date can be anything from a visit to a museum, a hike, reading a fiction book in a cute cafe, or a visit to a new town – anything that you find fun, yet not necessarily ‘artistic’.
These types of dates are great for anyone – artists and non-artists – because we are all creative in some way. Everyday we use creativity to cook, decorate our home, dress, plan parties, create school/sport/class schedules for our busy family, journal, knit or to be artistically creative. Taking time to re-inspire your creative side will help invigorate every area of your life.
This series showcases ideas to get you creatively inspired.
Montclair Art Museum
The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) has a great collection of American and Native American art. The current exhibit, American Visions 1870-1940, showcases scenes of America in Impressionistic and modern styles. Right now, Pueblo Indian pottery from the Native American collection is also on display, which shows the intricate and impressive patterns and textures of pottery.
MAM is a great artist date because it offers beautiful and varied artwork without being overwhelming. It’s one floor of exhibits can be viewed in a leisurely hour. Admission is $12, but it pays to be a member, if you live close by, because you can stop in for just 30 minutes as well as have the chance to see the full rotation of their exhibits.
What to do during an artist date? Walk around the museum, slowly enjoying each piece of art. Use all of your senses. Be present and aware of your surroundings. Take your time. Bring a notebook to jot down ideas or thoughts. Most importantly, enjoy it!
When you’re finished, MAM is a short walk to Montclair Center, which is great for lunch, tea time, or more inspiration!
(Open Wednesday to Sunday 12-5pm)
